The AU Mission in Somalia, which was first authorized by the African union Peace & Security Council to be then mandated by the United Nations Security Council on19th January 2007 and will be coming to end on 31st March 2022.
The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace & Security Ambassador Bankole Adeoye visited Mogadishu for high-level engagements with the Federal Government, Civil Society representatives and Somalia’s International Partners. He also thanked them all for their support to AMISOM in the past 15 years and the shared progress and priority areas for the new mission the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia #ATMIS in collaboration with the Somali Security Forces as they take over full national security.
On 6th February 2022 in the African Union Week, Somalia co-jointly with the Peace & Security Council agreed upon as of the 21st February 2022 the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) shall be thereafter referred to us the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia paving the way for an eventual full withdrawal.
Also in his 3 day visit Ambassador Adeoye also reaffirmed that the new AU mission (ATMIS) will focus on stabilization & state building processes but with a clear end goal in sight, where Somalia will assume full National Security Control.
