At least 15 people were killed in Baledweyne, Hiraan in central Somalia on Saturday after a suicide bomber entered a café then detonating his explosive vest in the packed space teeming with local administration officials, visiting election delegates and politicians.
Most of the people who died were civilians while more than 20 others were wounded in the town. Police spokesman Dini Roble Ahmed told the media the explosion was huge and caused significant damage. The militant group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in Beledweye which has been condemned by Prime Minister Mohamed Roble. The town is also set to host lower house elections in the coming week.
In the Saturday 2 people were killed while 5 others were injured in another teashop explosion in Bosaso, Bari Northeast Somalia.
Puntland Regional Police told State-owned Radio Mogadishu that an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at the busy tea shop in the town around 6:30 p.m. The explosion targeted election delegates who have previously shown support for some candidate’s rights to run for office unimpeded.
Similarly Bosaso is the seat of a contested election process for the lower house seats (parliament) which makes the public question if the attacks are politically expedient. No one claimed responsibility for this attack, although there is some finger pointing.
